Program Requirements

Students majoring in Art History in the Department of Art are required to:

The art history program of study is flexible as long as the prerequisites are followed.

The program is comprised of:

Students should check with the relevant department in which they wish to pursue their minor for the required number of hours. Commonly pursued minors by art history students include English, women’s studies, business, history, anthropology, and philosophy.

Students are advised to take the introductory courses as well as the two art history surveys early in their programs.

Required Courses

Prerequisites: ART 2030 and ART 2130 or consent of the instructor and ENG 2001 or its equivalent.

Summer Courses

Although this is not guaranteed, the art history survey courses are often offered during the summer. Advanced art history courses are only offered during the summer as part of study abroad programs.

Elective Courses

Students select a total of 21 hours (7 courses) from the list below. Several art history elective courses are offered each semester. Most courses are offered once every two years but the schedule of offering each course varies. Students interested in taking a specific course are encouraged to contact one of the art historians. Most (but not all) Art History elective courses are designated as Writing in the Discipline (WID) courses and have a prerequisite of ENG 2001 or its equivalent.
