Kristi Abrecht
BS in Art Education with a minor in Women's Studies, 2009

On paper, Kristi Abrecht majored in art education, but in reality, she majored in tenacity. "It was an intense experience," she says, "but in the best way."

"I was pushed creatively and surrounded by so many inspiring individuals and ideas. When you can survive all of the critiques, the fear of failing is much less because you know that you can bounce back from the criticism."

Kristi did, indeed, bounce back . . . all the way to California where she is now working towards a Master of Arts degree in Women's Studies at San Diego State University. Her teacher training at Appalachian presented Kristi with unique opportunities in her graduate program to teach and mentor high school and undergraduate students.

This past year has been a busy one for Kristi. She has been busy working on her thesis which she describes as research on "the expression of intersectional identities in fictional webcomics by women and those who do not conform to the gender binary. I am interested in the resistance to dominant character narrative paradigms present in mainstream comics by these alternative representations of marginalized groups."

At Hoover High School in San Diego, she served as the Graduate Student Coordinator of the Young Women's Studies Club. The club provides mentoring partnerships between undergraduate students at SDSU and students at the high school and promotes the arts in education as a means for self expression and community for young women. Kristi also helped put on SDSU's first feminist art show as a fundraiser for the Center for Community Solutions, a local domestic violence and rape crisis center.

After graduate school, Kristi hopes to teach at a university, community college, or at the K-12 level. To our current crop of art students, she offers these lessons:
