The Smith Gallery presents Art and Design Expo, a juried student exhibition organized by the Smith Gallery and the Department of Art featuring outstanding student work from across campus . It will be on view February 3-20, 2020.

Art and Design Expo is an annual exhibition hosted by the Smith that is open to all students at Appalachian State University. Students submit work in any media that pertains to the production of art and design such as prototypes, digital renderings and examples of fashion, furniture, interior and graphic design, printmaking, painting, performance art, installation, video, photography, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork and fibers.

The exhibition this year was juried by Amy Herman and Amy Bagwell, the co-founders of Good Year Arts, an artist led residency and events program in Charlotte, NC. Over three hundred pieces were submitted by students, and less than sixty were selected. Students juried into Art and Design Expo have the chance to win several awards including Best in Show ($300), 1 st prize ($200), 2 nd prize ($150), and 3 rd prize ($100). Purchase Awards will be given by the Appalachian Permanent Collection at Plemmons Student Union. A People’s Choice Award ($150) will also be selected through votes collected during the exhibition.

A public reception and award ceremony will be held in honor of the students exhibited on Wednesday, February 19 from 6-8pm at the Smith Gallery. Awards winners will be announced along with food, music, and honors. The gallery is located in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at 733 Rivers Street. Regular hours are Monday-Friday, 9 to 5pm. Admission is Free.
